Gretna Green

Gretna Green is possibly the most romantic places in the UK. This small Scottish village has become the icon for love. In 1754 Lord Harwicke made it law that anyone under the age of 21 could not marry in England. Therefore young couples would elope to Gretna to be married, as the law stated any one over the age of 15 could marry. The ceremony would be short and simple, ending with striking the anvil to seal the marriage.
